Home
For this piece, I wanted to represent my depiction of “home” to be something temporary. Because my father was in the military, my family moved around often. In each year of college, I’ve moved to a new place. With that being said, I’m always prepared to move and the physical house in my point of view is always changing. When moving, you pack up all the things that are important to you and try to put those items in your new environment. The only things that you can’t pack up our memories, family, friends, and new experiences.
In my piece, I made a replica of a fort that I made as a child. I loved to build forts and even make doll houses out of boxes. I used cardboard to make my replica to represent the boxes that I used to make forts as well as boxes that used for moving and storage. I used duct tape to tape the boxes because it was a go-to material for me when creating my doll houses. I used bubble wrap as a carpet because I loved playing with bubble wrap as a child as well. Overall, I wanted to make the replica look like a child made it.
On the sides of the box, I wrote the words “living room,” “bedroom,” “kitchen,” and “welcome home.” The rooms represent the way that my family organizes items for moving that I have adapted towards my own moving. “Welcome Home” represents me as a child turning moving boxing into forts. On the chimney of the “house” I wrote the words “family,” “memories,” and “new” to represent the things you can’t pack up with you but remain close to your heart.
